Signs of trouble

Siding sheds the rain. The layer behind it stops the rest.

When the water barrier and flashing fail, the damage stays hidden until it shows at the surface. Seven signs to look for, starting on the south and west walls.

  1. 01Paint that peels again a year after painting, in the same place. Water is pushing it off from behind.
  2. 02Swollen, cupped or split boards especially at the bottom edge.
  3. 03Soft spots when you press a screwdriver into the siding near a window corner.
  4. 04Gaps at trim and corners where caulk has pulled away.
  5. 05Dark streaks below windows which often point to missing or failed flashing above the window.
  6. 06Siding touching the ground, a roof or a deck where it wicks water up.
  7. 07Inside clues such as bubbling paint, stains or a musty smell on an outside wall.

Questions

What people ask first.

Short answers. Call if yours isn't here.

Do you work with insurance claims?

We can photograph the damage and write up the repair for your claim. Your insurer decides what's covered.

Which siding should I choose?

It depends on your house, your budget and how much upkeep you want. We bring samples and compare the options with you on the visit.

Can you replace just a few boards?

Usually, yes. Cracks, gaps and loose boards in one area can be repaired without re-siding the house. If the boards are failing all around, a re-side costs less over a few years.

How do I know if water is getting behind my siding?

Paint that keeps peeling in the same spot, swollen or soft boards near windows and corners, and stains or a musty smell inside an outside wall. See all seven signs.
